A major role of the MIA is to represent and lobby Government on behalf of the meetings and events sector. During the pandemic, key hospitality industry associations came together to represent the concerns of the industry and communicate back to businesses the way forward. Each association put together guidance for businesses on safe running or reopening business and during this time and the MIA approached Direction Training to support the development of guidance for the Meetings and Events sector. The guidance was approved by the DCMS and became master guidance for the whole sector.

Having worked in and with hospitality businesses for many years, we were very aware of the practicalities that would face businesses in re-opening after the Covid lockdown. We aimed to produce easy to follow guidance avoiding the’ gobbledegook’ that was so prevalent at the time! Research was carried out looking at both UK and international practices within the sector and reference made to the World Health Organisation and other accredited medical organisations.
Little did we know when the first guidance was produced, that there would be more lockdowns and more re-openings and more updates, culminating in the 2022 Living with Covid-19 guidance and reflecting resultant attitudes to managing infection in the workplace in the AIM Secure accreditation.
